Prrrrrrfect Day

This cat pretty much says it all.   Day after Thanksgiving and all I want is a couch and a Sharpie : )     This is Jasper, plucked from Kostia on Flickr.

As is tradition at our house on Thanksgiving, we did an art project with the cousins.  Previous projects have included handmade snow globes, beaded Christmas ornaments, small decorative Christmas  trees. This year we did ceramic Christmas ornaments with Sharpies.  See our fabulous results below!

It starts with a bowl o' Sharpies

Holidays, Sharpie Style

The holidays are always such a busy time, who has time to THINK?   As you head into Thanksgiving’s Big Sleep (compliments of turkey’s tryptophan and a day spent on your feet in the kitchen), kick back, relax, and enjoy this delightful little holiday video.  Pop artist Jelene Morris turns it out Sharpie Style, and like her legions of followers, we’re mesmerized by her fun, funky creations.

A Sharpie Thanksgiving

Okay, I’m not sure where this came from but it’s on sharpie.com in the History section.  Back in the early 60′s when Sharpie was first introduced, Johnny Carson and Jack Parr from the Tonight Show were some of our first product endorsers.  So I think that’s where the NBC Sharpie Peacock was born.

Now if a Sharpie NBC “Turkey” isn’t exactly what you had in mind for your Thanksgiving centerpiece, here’s a quick idea from interior designer Libby Langdon to personalize your table.  This is an easy one for me because I happen to have dozens of decorative stones “sleeping” in the backyard, just waiting for a place at my Thanksgiving table.   I’m going to use some combination of Sharpie’s new Coleurs Cafe markers – the colors are just right for Thanksgiving:  Earl Grey, Pomegranite, Blueberry, Mocha and Hibiscus.

“Thankful” Stone Place Cards and Centerpiece

Gather smooth creamy river rocks from a lake, pond or beach or buy a big bag of them at a local garden center or home improvement store. Write each guest’s name with a black Sharpie pen on a stone and rest them on napkins at each place setting on the table. Fill a large glass bowl or vase with the remaining river stones and a glass of black Sharpie pens on a buffet. When guests arrive, ask them to write what they are thankful for in one word on a stone (they can do as many as they like)… have the table set with a bamboo or cork runner (or any runner you have) down the center and set patches of moss on top of the runner. Ask guests to place their “thankful stones” down the center of the tables in and around the moss and then complete the table setting by adding loads of little white votive candles in clear glass holders to create a warm glow. This is a fun idea because the stones double as place cards and it’s also a conversation starter that gets people talking at the table about what they are thankful for.

Light up a room with Sharpie

I love, love, love this!   A really bright idea – a lampshade designed with a Sharpie by  Shelly Norsworthy of Walla Walla, Washington (a mostly rural area with a growing winery community, Shelly says).  Here’s how she did it:

First she printed a template from diyideas.com silhouette art, then she taped the template onto the inside of the shade. She sat in front of a window where the light acted like a backlight and used a Sharpie fine point marker – the same Sharpie she uses to label her kids’ clothes – to first outline the template, then color it in.

Total project time:  15 minutes!

“I already had the lampshade but I wanted to pull in a black and white motif in my master bedroom,” she said.  “It’s an easy way to get a custom look and the ladies in the Design on a Dime group on Cafe Moms thought it was really cool.  I didn’t intend for it to be this big art project; I just didn’t want to watch another episode of Hanna Montana, so while I was sitting there I did this.”

Shelly has two school age children.  “I don’t have a business as of yet, but am seriously considering starting a staging company. Because I live in a very rural area, with not even a Target in sight, I’m forced to come up with inexpensive yet unique decor items that don’t look like they came from a big box store (although they probably did:)).

Diyideas.com is my favorite on-line resource for home dec projects..BTW, the silhouette art in the background of one photo was also done with the help of a Sharpie and the same templates.”

I think a light just went on…I want a Sharpie lampshade too!  Re-mark-able!

Sharpie Sighting – Twilight's Kristen Stewart

Kristen Stewart signs with Sharpie

Where the stars go, so does Sharpie!

Just as everyone expected, the vampire romance “Twilight” opened like gangbusters this weekend, raking in $70.5 million in ticket sales.    The movie is based on Stephenie Meyer’s novel of forbidden love between vampire Edward Cullen and bookish high schooler Bella Swan, played by Kristen Stewart.  Stewart signed autographs with a Sharpie at one of the premiers.  While the book was at first considered a teen read, it wasn’t long before word spread and grown women found themselves swooming over the neck-biting romance.    I haven’t read it but I have plenty of friends who have.  Here’s one review:

“Okay, I admit I saw Twilight with my sister today and my heart went pitter patter for Edward. I couldn’t put the book down either! Ah to be a teenager again and in love with a gorgeous vampire!!!!!”

Heather and Lola answer your Sharpie questions

Heather and Lola - you have questions, they have answers!

Meet Heather Cooper and Lola Walker, the Sharpie Answer Girls!  Heather and Lola work in Sharpie’s consumer affairs department.  They answer more questions in a day than the mother of a two-year-old!

“We get some pretty interesting questions,” Heather says, “some that even we can’t answer – and we probably know more about Sharpie than anybody : )  I think everybody who works on a brand should work in the consumer affairs department first.  It’s really the best way to find out just what makes a brand tick with consumers.”  (Note to Sharpie brand managers: do a rotation there.)

“Most of the calls and emails we get are positive,” Lola says. “People want to know where to buy a certain type of Sharpie in their area, or whether a Sharpie is permanent on glass (Sharpie markers are permanent on most surfaces).  But every once in awhile we get somebody with a problem, and it’s our job to come up with the solution.  Sometimes it’s a challenge, like solving a Sodoku puzzle.  But that’s why we’re here!”

Heather and Lola will be here on the Sharpie Blog every Friday with answers to your questions, like this one from Beverly in New Mexico.

Q: I notice some Sharpie markers have the ACMI seal on the barrel that says non-toxic. Does this mean I can use them on skin?

The patron saint of shoe longevity

Rachel Sutherland

When it comes to fashion, Sharpie is a girl’s best friend.  But hey, why take my word for it when you can turn to a trusted and respected source like Rachel Sutherland.  Rachel is the style editor for the Charlotte Observer and she writes the blog If The Shoe Fits.  Rachel recently wrote a post titled Sharpie Love where she calls Sharpie “the patron saint of shoe longevity.”

Her story starts with the sad demise of her Dansko clogs (Danish shoes with a horse history.  Check out their funny-geeky story here).    Rachel admits even a stiletto girl needs an occasional break from the high altitudes, but when her beloved Dansko’s started to reach the end of their shoe life, Rachel devised a quick rehab scheme, buying up a slew of Sharpies in a variety of brown-ish shades.  Well, dear readers, the story ends with a lot of Sharpie love in the shoe closet.  See the “wild” outcome below.

Rachel's rescued Dansko's

I’ll close with a few of Rachel’s fashion tips:

You don’t need to spend a million dollars to look like you do.

No one has to know what size you wear unless you tell them.

Self-confidence is sexier than any stiletto or tight dress. And it matches everything you own.

Rad Rider Meets Industrial Sharpie

Here’s a ride you won’t want to get off of anytime soon, thanks to this cool Sharpie “paint” job created by radrider.pinkbike.com.

Rad Rider posted this on pinkbike.com.  Here, in the words of the artist himself…

After being inspired by a Lamborghini with a Sharpie paint job, I decided to take apart my BLK MRKT Riot and start to work. When I first started I didn’t realize what I was getting myself into and wasn’t sure what people would think of it.  After posting my first picture to Pinkbike and getting a bunch of positive feed back I kept at it and this is the final product.

Although there seem to have been attempts by bike manufacturers to apply art to their products, they never seem to go all out, and when you hear of a unique or custom bike you think of maybe a mono color painted frame with matching colored components. Even before I saw the Sharpie’d Lambo I was thinking about different ways of making my bike truly unique and artistic.

Every little peace matters

Emma's Peace

Thought I’d get a jump on the holidays with this card created by Emma, age 6.  Emma’s “Pees on -th” card (translation:  Peace on Earth) is part of the  One Million Peace Signs project on Flickr.   Check out the group’s website and blog.

Here’s what the project is about:

“Peace can start small, and every single act of Peace matters. Maybe you don’t have the time or energy to make a huge impact on Peace today…but maybe you can still commit some Little Act of Peace. And you can pass it on…right here. Brainstorm it at the dinner table and add your idea…we think it’s gonna be something we can all learn from and add to!”

Grab a Sharpie and do a Peace Doodle!

As of this posting, Emma’s photo is one of 9,006 photos from 2,988 members in 321 days.   Scrolling through the images is not only moving but inspiring.  I don’t know about you, but there are never enough ways to say “peace.”

Check out some of the amazing peace statements that have been submitted, then remember you don’t have to climb the highest mountain to spread the peace word; sometimes a Sharpie scribble is enough.

Peace.
