Making a Mark on Late Night

Just about the only thing that seems permanent in the world of late night talk shows lately is Sharpie.  I’ve seen many-a-Sharpie in the hands of Leno, CoCo, Letterman, Kimmel (need I continue?)… and they don’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon!

Jimmy Fallon host of Late Night on NBC, even confirms his love for Sharpie in the current issue of People Magazine.   In “6 Revelations of Jimmy Fallon,” the host reports that Sharpie as the “Best Autograph Pen!”

“I have terrible handwriting so that either makes it less legible or more understandable when it’s messy.  Like if it were a Bic pen people would be like, ”Dude, you should be a doctor”

*1 point Sharpie.  0 points that other brand… (muaha)

Made with Sharpie, This Was.

I came across this blast from the past while cleaning up my computer desktop this morning…

Created by Jon Burgerman, this custom helmet derives from aaaall the way back to 2007 and made with a  Metallic Sharpie Marker for The Vader Project for the ’07 Star Wars Celebration Europe exhibition held in London at Excel.

"Armed with a silver Sharpie, I scrawled and colored my way over the helmet, dropping in little Star Wars references as I went…." - Jon Burgerman

Recently,  Jon has been traveling the world creating murals for AOL.  Here’s a time-lapse video of him creating a mural at the AOL headquarters in Manhattan, New York.  Check out Jon’s London agents, Debut Art for more of his designs and photos from his “mural travels.”

(That is one awesome sweater! The fact that he turns it around so that we can see it’s awesomeness, wow…what a guy!)

Be sure to take a tour of Jon’s work at on his own website: www.jonburgerman.com !!

How Do You Do-odle?

I was doodling with my Sharpie Pen during a call this morning when I realized that this happens more frequently than not.  Usually I don’t even notice I’m doing it when BAM! a tidal wave of ink has crashed upon my notebook!

So what can I do with these drawings?…

  1. They are not necessarily frame worthy and FOR SURE no one wants to buy these – I don’t even have 1,000 followers on Twitter yet! (so lame..I know)
  2. I know for a fact that I’m not the only person who does this (that’s right VP, I saw your Moleskin!)
  3. Later on at a meeting - I’m going to move my notebook over juuust a tad so you can see my doodle.  I’m not going to actually show it to you; you’re going to ”happen” to glance at it freely, uninhibited.  “Yeah, that’s right dude look at it.. we both know that’s a pretty good doodle.”

*3 really has no relevance, I just wanted to know if anyone else has ever done this :)

Take a look at the edge of your note pad, planner, books, sticky notes, printed out power point slides, maybe even your hands or shoes.  (go! look!)  It’s something that just happens – something comes over you and you just draw!  There are probably hundreds of little doodles all over the place and what do you do with those doodles? Nothing!  There aren’t enough homes to share these one of a kind drawings, so why not show them some more love..

I’ve made a  ”Doodle” album on Facebook ( maybe down the road a better name will hit me).  Here we can share our random doodles that typically don’t get much recognition- sometimes they are really dumb, inspirational, silly, random, pretty, whatever, but let’s show them off!  This is a “no sliding the notebook” towards someone, this is a full out  “Check out what I drew while you were yammering on about the new printer policy.”  I’ve posted some of my doodles and will continue to :) Post your doodles too!

Here are a couple of mine you will find on Facebook:

Robert is NOT Bothered by Sharpie

+  =

Did you see Late night with Jimmy Fallon last night?  If not, no worries, that’s what I’m here for.  Today I can be your Joel McHale of late night television!

Well my friends, Fallon has a bit called “Robert is Bothered” in which he impersonates Robert Pattinson (the lady killer of Twilight that has tweens everywhere in a frenzy) as he gets annoyed by everyday things in life.   Last night’s episode debuted “Obviously Robert is Bothered by Valentine’s Day,” where “Robert” goes on a rant about VDay.  Is that a Sharpie in your hand Robert? Why yes, it is…

Roses are Red Violets are Blue…

I always forget the words to this poem. So next year I’ll write them on my shoe…IN SHARPIE!

Do you have your own version of this poem? Finish it in your own words!

Here are more VDay videos with Chicagoans expressing their thoughts on Valentine’s Day:

These videos got me thinking… Sometimes Oftentimes, when I want to express myself (vocally) the words just aren’t there.  I get nervous or my head is racing with 1,000 thoughts; I want to say them all and it just doesn’t come out how I had planned…I hate that!  You know earlier I had it down perfectly and then afterwards I’m left thinking, “Brain, how could you do this to me? Of course NOW you’re calm and collected.. Quit telling me all that I should have said ” …so frustrating.

While I may not always be the eloquent speaker I’d like to be, I take the good with the bad and to be honest, I can write one heck of a letter! The words just come to me!  Am I alone on this or can you relate?  Expressing my true thoughts and feelings is easier for me in this respect.  I’m not sure why but whatever the reason, the words just flow.  They flow from my brain through my hand, right onto the paper (obviously the process is more complicated but I’m not talking science here).

So if you’re like me, take advantage of Valentine’s Day with the power of a pen (Sharpie pen of course) and paper.  Take the opportunity to tell the people in your life that you love them and why you love them.  Express yourself and don’t let the day go to waste, despite your love or hate for VDay.  I guarantee that you will enjoy it so much more if you express the love for those you care about.

Now let me end by asking you:   How do you express yourself?

No one says it quite like the gangster of love...

Dreaming of McSharpy

I became a Chicago Blackhawks fan today.  I confess my passion is only skin deep.  While we have more Blackhawk fans here at Sharpie HQ than you can shake a stick at (Sharpie is based outside of Chicago – Hawks are hometown heroes!) I just recently found my own reason to believe.  And it has nothing to do with scoreboards or trophies or board checks.  His name is Patrick Sharp.  Sharpy:

Sharpy with Sharpie

Forget that his name lines up nicely with Sharpie, the marker I blog and Tweet and Facebook about all day.  Forget that I found this doctored photo of him tearing up the ice with a giant Sharpie marker in hand. Forget his amazing hockey stats, his smooth moves, his already huge numbers of adoring fans.  Today I am a Blackhawks fan for one reason and one reason only:

Sharp Shooter

It was for much the same reason that I became a Kennedy fan:

Sharp Dresser

While I’ll watch the games, note the score, yell at the refs and occasionally visit concessions, mostly I just want to watch Patrick Sharp. I know I am not alone…which is why I know you won’t want to miss this…

SHARPY-SHARPIE NIGHT SATURDAY FEBRUARY 13

Diehard or fareweather, Blackhawks fans won’t want to miss this.  It’s Sharpy-Sharpie night at the United Center where the first 20,000 fans will receive a personalized Patrick Sharp Blackhawk Sharpie.  Be sure to grab tickets to the  game against the Atlanta Thrashers (Atlanta also home to Sharpie’s parent company, Newell Rubbermaid).

Here’s a sneak peek of what awaits 20,000 lucky fans:

Sharpy Sharpies go to the first 20,000 fans at the Feb. 13 game

I confess I have some connections over here at Sharpie.  I just might be able to get my hands on one of these beauties.  It will serve as my official indoctrination into the Chicago Blackhawks fan club.  I know I’ve got miles of ice to go before they’ll let me in.  In the meantime, I’ve got my eye on the prize, and he’s lookin’ sharp.

In the dog house this Valentine’s Day?

Try as you might, a sorry puppy face isn’t going to save you if you come up short on Valentine’s Day.  Guys — the ladies EXPECT things! I’m not saying we’re a bunch of materialistic martyres. I’m saying a woman wants to know she is loved, especially on Valentine’s Day.  So for the love of chocolate, send in the flower-waving troops already!

Speaking of dogs, thought this was interesting: According to a global poll by Reuters/Ipsos, one-fifth of adults would prefer to be with their pet than their partner on Valentine’s Day. The survey of 24,000 people in 23 countries found 21 percent of adults would rather spend February 14 with Fido. I’m guessing a dog doesn’t really require much, just a nice pat on the head.

(Don’t even think about it )

Of course, there are some reasonable people in the world – secure in the knowledge that they are loved, true romantics at heart. Check out the videos below and heed their advice. Then maybe she’ll let you back in the house in time for Valentine’s Day.

Touchdown Onto Valentine’s Day

It’s Monday, you may not be in the brightest of moods…  You stayed up late last night celebrating the most popular non-national holiday of the year, your belt is a little tighter after eating endless amounts of seven-layer dip, on the way to the coffee machine people think you are talking to yourself, when you’re actually just reminding your feet “right, left, right, left…”  Frankly, your mind just isn’t quite working in full-force yet – which probably won’t kick in until Tuesday or Wednesday.

Just to make your day a little bit more difficult to get through, here’s a reminder:  V-Day (or should I say D-Day) is right around the corner! The pressure is really on to get your that quality gift.  So what does this mean?  Are you excited or aggravated by this fact?  Maybe last week you were all for the lovey dovey holiday but as the pressure mounts are you beginning to change your mind?  Or maybe you absolutely hated the thought of hearts and candy last week and now that you have a date, you’re all for it!  Hey, I don’t know what your thoughts are…but that’s why I’m asking:

Valentine’s Day: Love it or Leave it?

Take a Picture, It’ll Last Longer

We’ve got love.  We’ve got hate.  We’ve got the good, the bad & the ugly presents.  What’s the next hot topic for the debate?! How about

Valentine’s Day Memories!

Memories are like pictures for your soul.  When you think back to that moment, you can see every detail, hear every sound, smell every scent, taste every last morsel —  it all comes rushing back to you in an instant just with one thought. Valentine’s Day is tough though.  There is a lot of pressure to make this one day memorable, a  day that will be remembered and cherished forever.  Do we achieve that every year? Maybe. Maybe not.  Either way a memory is made and we add yet another snapshot to our internal photo album.

So what’s the best or worst  memory you have of Valentine’s Day?  Every one has some story to tell, what’s yours?  Maybe you had that perfect Valentine’s Day that you will never forget.  Maybe you had a magical night with your sweetheart and to this day it was the best night of your life!  Did you get a bad rash from the “roses” your lover bought you?  Did you bloat like a blowfish post-VDay chocolates?  Tell us about your VDay memory –  we want to know!

When we were downtown we got a few people chatting about their VDay memories -  here are new videos from the on-street interviews:

Join the conversation on Facebook where you can comment and upload your own videos and pics!   We will be posting more videos through the 14th so check back to see fi you or any of your friends are posted!

Don’t forget, all the videos are uploaded on Youtube
