Creativity Worth Millions

If ever there were an article that spoke to every Sharpie user, the following might take the cake.

Posted on the Forbes Blog, ”Is Your Creativity Worth Millions?” points out that everyone has the ability to be creative, it’s just a matter of utilizing what you have. Read on and be inspired to unleash your creativity. You never know, the next million dollar work of art just might start with a Sharpie? Maybe it’s your Sharpie…

When will you uncap what's inside?

Is Your Creativity Worth Millions?

Ever wondered what a painting worth $106 million looks like? I’ve seen one. It’s pretty good. In fact, it’s the most expensive painting ever sold at auction. Someone really took a shine to it to pay all that money. (It was a Picasso portrait of one of his mistresses.)

What it tells you is that creativity can be worth millions. And in terms not just of dollars but of fans and followers. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but there’s a new movement on the rise, and it’s purely devoted to the freshest sometimes fantastical things we can produce. I’m talking about creativity.

Creativity takes countless forms—music, art, sculpture, photography, illustration, and so on—whatever your mind can produce with the help of a few materials. Just Google and you’ll find loads of websites, forums, top tens and favorites devoted to all things creative.

Some of the things out there are downright wacky. But then that’s often the point. They you noticed. Creativity can spark such passion that people will even gather in large groups and go buck naked in public just to be part of a living artwork, crouching or lying nude for hours with complete strangers just to say they were there and they were part of something unique and great.

The truth is that we all have that creative spark inside of us. Why else would so many of us doodle while at work? But technology has really unleashed it. There are countless drawing and illustration apps for the iPad and games consoles, and people proudly show off their work online, inspiring others to follow suit and see what they can achieve with a few finger strokes.

Every day I tell this to the young talented creatives who ribbit in StrawberryFrog: In today’s world, when you have so little time of your own after your battles with work and the day’s stresses and strains, it’s easy to give up on enjoying your creative side. After all, you’ve got far more important things to do that sit sketching with a pencil.

But just think. Where would we be if the world’s most famous artists had felt that way? They had a passion, a seed of talent, and with nurturing and careful attention they became the masters of their craft.

As for the world’s most expensive painting, you can see it here. The fact that it’s a Picasso . . . well, that may just have added a few bucks to the price tag. Now, where did I put my pencil and sketch pad?

Black and white mural by JESS3 made w/ Sharpie!

Threadless Loves Sharpie Winner

There are many things we feel nostalgic toward when thinking of the 1980′s. Some miss the hot pink makeup and intoxicating fumes of Aqua Net, others long for the sweet serenade of a young Lionel Richie. While you could go on waiting for Doc’s time machine to work, there’s no need because Threadless & Sharpie are here to fill that big neon void in your heart.

In February, Threadless and Sharpie held a design contest challenging you to design a t-shirt inspired by Sharpie’s new 80′s Glam Limited Edition colors. After reviewing hundreds of designs, we’ve chosen a winner!

Congratulations to Rodrigo Leonardo Batista Ferreira and cheers to his winning design, Nostalgia

Black is Beautiful

Many Sharpie fans pride themselves on their vast markers collections, however I have yet to see a fan who prides himself/herself in owning one type of marker. Allister Lee, operator of Studio B.I.B, a Toronto based creative studio, is working on just that - building the most extensive collection of black markers in the world, and drawing each one to scale, according to Design Milk. Lee has titled his collection the Black Marker B.I.B.L.E.

Allister Lee

“What began as a handful of drawing supplies in a shoebox has steadily grown over the past decade into what may already be the world’s largest collection of black markers and marking devices.” -Studio B.I.B.

To commemorate the 500th marker, Studio B.I.B released this print, which you too can own to fulfill your marker obsession. At 523 markers and growing, Lee aims to collect 1,000 markers and own the Guinness Book of World Record title of the largest collection of black markers. I wonder how they will commemorate that triumphant day?!

“I started the collection in 2002. London was expensive. Drawing was free. I spent a lot of spare time drawing. I needed a bunch of different black markers to get certain effects in my illustrations and to mark on different surfaces so I stockpiled an assortment in a shoebox. You get to know and appreciate the things you use on a daily basis. And I guess I got to know and appreciate black markers. I only collect black because that’s what I think looks right when I put nib to surface.” – A. Lee

Can you spot the Sharpie Paint Marker?

Business-Minded Youth

Browsing through the Wall Street Journal yesterday, I spotted an article titled Who’s the Boss? When Jobs Are Scarce, the Kids Are. After getting over the mental image of a Tony Danza sitting at a typewriter on the set of one 80′s sitcom, I proceeded to read about the youth of America working to make a dime.

Adults are not the only ones affected by the recession -kids, tweens, and teens and are too. Jobs are scarce and with the summer months approaching, this is the time of the year when most young adults will be looking for work.

Sure we’ve all had summer jobs before – maybe retail sales of food service was your thing, but due to the lack of jobs, today’s youth is looking at summer vacation as more of an entrepreneur opportunity. “If you can’t find a job, you can create your own” says Steve Mariotti, founder of the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship.

The article profiles 5+ young business owners who have taken it upon themselves to make work when they could not find it. One girl in particular, 17yr old Sonika Singh sells hand designed sneakers in her start-up ”Rage Shoes.” Like many of you, Singh uses paints and Sharpie markers to create her designs on sneakers but she takes it a step further and makes a profit from them!

You never know, those Sharpie’d sneakers, denim and backpacks you’re sporting may have potential to earn you some extra cash. Take a tip from the kids in this article and the thousands of others out there and do something! The possibilities are endless.

Are you a young entrepreneur? What are you working on?
